Inputs and Outputs - Reflective Practice

This week:

A simple flow diagram reflecting my workflow and how each stage informs the next at every part of my research to realisation.

PROMPT / CONCEPT > SEMANTIC RESEARCH > CONTEXTUAL RESEARCH > THEMATIC RESEARCH > IDEA GENERATION > INITIAL THUMBNAILING > LAYOUT / COMPOSITION CONSIDERATIONS > COLOUR CONSIDERATION > MEDIA TESTING / EXPERIMENTATION > SKETCH TRANSFER > BLOCK CARVING > TEST PRINT > DIGITAL TRANSFER > CLEAN UP > PROOFING > FINAL OUTCOME > REFLECTION > SWOT > EVALUATION > SMART

This is a simple statement that defines the lens through which I try and tackle my artistic projects.

Universal: To develop thought-provoking, thematic solutions to conceptual problems backed by strong contextual research.

The headings in my flowchart and related creative processes can be sorted into INPUTS and OUTPUTS.

Inputs refer to:

  Knowledge, Skills, Experimentation and Reflections.

Traditional Skills, Media Testing, Sketch Transfers, Block Carving, Digital Skills, Proofing, Clean-up.

Outputs Refer to:

  Understanding and Implementing Theory.

           Evaluation, SWOT, SMART

  Semantic Research, Contextual Research

            Concept Consideration

  Practical Explorations.

            Idea Generation, Thumbnailing,

    Personal Objectives.

Actually achieving what I set out to do!

I used metaphor to quickly illustrate a diagram to describe my production pipeline.

The idea behind the “conveyor belt” motif is that each part of the factory is continuously working in tandem, different parts of the production pipeline use the robotic arms to feed into eachother and must be revisited to ensure the highest quality of final product is achieved. Some parts of this pipeline refer to hard skills such as carving or clean up, and some parts of it refer to soft skills such as concepting or research.

A couple of quick thumbnails were explored, and then this final outcome was done using a mouse in Photoshop.
